Mattress guide
We have put together a simple guide for you to gain a little more understanding of the types of mattresses currently available.
There are six main options to choose from:
Continuous coil mattress
The basic of mattresses, Continuous coil mattresses are made from a single looped wire. Because the springs move as one unit, you're more likely to be disturbed by your partner moving around in the night. The coils in these mattresses wear out more quickly than pocket springs, which means a new mattress is due sooner or uncomfortable nights for both if the mattres is shared.
Open coil mattress
An upgrade from continues coil mattresses, open-coil mattresses are made of single springs fixed together by wire.
- More luxurious, with individual small springs housed in separate fabric pockets.
- Springs work independently to respond to individual body weight.
- Ideal if there's a considerable weight or size variation between you and your partner.
- Turn regularly to ensure even settlement.
- Hand stitched sides for strong, stable edges.
Pocket sprung mattress
In these mattresses, the springs are sewn into individual fabric pockets. They provide better support for your body, as each coil absorbs the weight individually. So pocket sprung mattresses are good if you sleep on your side, which puts different pressures on your spine. Ideal if you move around a lot whilst sleeping as your partner is less likely to feel it.

Memory foam mattress/ memory mattress
Memory foam mattresses, ( memory mattresses ) are topped with a layer of temperature-sensitive viscoelastic material (memory foam). Memory foam mattresses are good at relieving pressure on painful joints by gently moulding to the shape of the boby, whilst maintainging support, but are pricier than the typical sprung mattress. Memory foam is affected by room temperature, so you might find the memory mattress cold and hard when you first go to bed. As it reacts to body heat, it moulds to your shape. It also reduces air circulation around your body, which makes the memory mattress feel warmer. Many people find this helpful in winter, especially because you can't use an electric underblanket with memory foam mattresses. But you may feel too hot in summer.
- Body heat reacts with the foam to soften it.
- The mattress then moulds to your body's contours and returns to its shape shortly after leaving the bed.
- Provides excellent support and enables natural movement during sleep.
- Helps to maintain correct posture and align spine horizontally when lying on your side.
- Hypo-allergenic with anti-microbial properties.
- Occasional (Monthly) rotation is necessary to distribute the wear evenly.
Pure foam mattress or latex mattress
Foam or latex mattresses can be a good option if you're allergic to house dust mites. Users who opt for such a mattress tend to rate these mattresses very highly and would not switch mattresses at all costs due to comfort and durability.
- Resilient feel with excellent durability.
- Hypo-allergenic with anti-microbial properties.
- Conforms to your body's contours.
- Breathable, so you won't overheat.
- Occasional rotation will distribute the wear evenly.
Mattress toppers
Mattress toppers add a thin layer of memory foam or extra padding to your existing bed mattress. They can be as expensive as buying a new mattress and won't provide more support if your old mattress is already sagging. If your mattress is getting on then it is high time to invest in a new one
